Memorials & Gravestones in Scotland
Our History
J & G Mossman Ltd, are one of Scotland’s oldest family-run Monumental Sculptors, the business having been established by William Mossman. He was the son of a family of Gold and Silversmiths in Edinburgh who had practised their craftsmanship in memorials and gravestones in the City for over 300 years. (John Knox’s house was at one time the property of the family.)
William Mossman first set up his business in Buchanan Street, Glasgow, moving later to Cathedral Street. His two sons, John and George, were trained by their father as sculptors while a third son, William, became an Architect and joined the firm with his brothers in 1832. At that time the Merchants House in Glasgow had secured ground for burying – now the Glasgow Necropolis – and the Mossman brothers’ undoubted fame and talent spread throughout Britain. Much of the work in Glasgow Necropolis and sculptural work on both public buildings and memorials was undertaken by Mossman and the business
expanded to the extent that in 1864 a young man from Forres, Peter Smith, with considerable experience of working in granite, was employed. On the death of John Mossman in 1890, the last of the Mossmans, Peter Smith acquired the business and continued to trade under the name of J & G Mossman. On Peter Smith’s death in 1911 the business was carried on by his son James and then his grandson David Pollock Smith. The present owner Russell Pollock Smith is the fourth generation and evidence that the firm is still very much run as a family business is seen by his son Kenny, now the Manager.
As a Company, J & G Mossman continues to provide a comprehensive range of styles and designs of Memorial Stones at extremely competitive prices, erected throughout Scotland. Additionally, the firm carries out the addition of inscriptions to existing memorials, the cleaning and repainting of existing inscriptions, supplying and cleaning plaques, statues, etc. Brochures are available on request and, of course, estimates are free, with expert workmanship guaranteed.
Our Head Office is now located in Alloa in Scotland where Mr Pollock Smith can be contacted, either he or his staff are always ready to assist in any way possible. Appointments may be made at home or at any of the firm’s branches.
