Origins
The story of J & G Mossman Ltd is rooted in centuries of skilled craftsmanship and a long standing dedication to memorial masonry in Scotland. The business began with William Mossman, whose family had practised fine metalwork and memorial art in Edinburgh for several generations. This heritage in shaping, engraving and designing commemorative pieces laid the foundations for what would become one of Scotland's most established memorial firms.
In the early years, William set up his workshop in Glasgow, where he later moved to Cathedral Street. His sons, John and George, trained under him as sculptors, contributing to a growing reputation for quality and detailed artistry. A third son, William, entered the architectural profession before joining the family business in 1832. During this period, the development of the Glasgow Necropolis created significant demand for skilled memorial craftsmen.
Evolution of the Firm
As the business grew, it attracted skilled craftsmen, including Peter Smith from Forres, who brought specialist knowledge of granite masonry. Following the death of John Mossman in 1890, the last of the Mossman family, Peter Smith acquired the business and continued trading under the name J & G Mossman. After Peter Smith’s death in 1911, the firm was carried on by his son James Smith, and later by his grandson David Pollock Smith, each maintaining the company’s reputation for high-quality memorial work throughout the 20th century. The business then passed to Russell Pollock Smith, and today it is proudly owned and run by Kenny Smith, representing the latest generation in this long family tradition of craftsmanship and care.
